Susan G. Komen Foundation
Oh, August! For many, it’s a leisurely time of summer fun and relaxed schedules. But for Komen Philadelphia, August has all the hustle and excitement of December, for now is the time we power up for our annual breast health events: Sisters for the Cure, Latinas United for the Cure, Asian-American Women’s Breast Health Awareness and our new Big Pink Footprint seminars.
In the course of a year, Komen Philadelphia will educate and empower over 1,000 women for each of these four initiatives. Exactly who are these women, you ask? They are…
… breast cancer survivors whose lives are paralyzed out of fear of recurrence. They come to us frightened, and leave with the support, reassurance and knowledge to live full lives after breast cancer.
… women who’ve recently been “down-sized” at work and don’t know how to continue their breast health regimen without insurance. They come to us helpless, and leave with appointments for free mammograms.
… women in their 60′s who never had a mammogram because in their culture ‘women’s issues’ are not to be discussed outside the home. They come to us confused, and leave empowered.
… women working multiple part-time jobs to support their families who feel abnormalities in their breasts, but will not seek help because they can’t afford it. They come to us scared with no recourse for treatment, and leave with nurse navigators dedicated to finding them assistance and making them survivors.
… women with whom you sit at church, share an office, grew up.
As you enjoy your last summer weeks, please take time to see the faces of these women in your hearts, and make a donation to help Komen Philadelphia continue our annual events. Every donation makes a difference in providing women with foundations of life-long support and lifestyle changes that will live on for generations.
With my gratitude,
Elaine I. Grobman
